The mayor of the city of Nemuro was not able to join a five-day visit of the Japanese delegation, to evaluate the potential of a joint economic activities.
Hasegawa originally planned to participate in the work of the delegation, but was notified of the foreign Ministry the day before departure that he will not be able to participate. The Ministry did not disclose the reasons for which Hasegawa was eliminated.
A senior Japanese official admitted: “the Mayor Hasegawa was subjected to retaliatory sanctions.”
Hasegawa was placed in the “black list, because it plays a key role in the movement of Japan, aimed at the return of the Islands.
The city of Nemuro, on the Eastern tip of Hokkaido, close to the disputed Islands and acts as a base for a campaign to return the territories to Japan.
In April 2014, Tokyo announced that it had rejected visas to 23 Russian nationals as part of the sanctions for the illegal annexation by Russia Ukrainian Crimea.
Earlier, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia does not intend to give the Kuril Islands to Japan, and not begging in this country the conclusion of a peace Treaty.
“We, as a respectable and responsible nation, as a country, the successor state of the Soviet Union confirmed at the time that we are committed to all the obligations which assumed the USSR”, – said Lavrov.
