The Russian foreign Ministry commented on the decision of the court in the Hague

The decision concerning the vessel Arctic Sunrise.

The decision of arbitration in the Hague, obliging Russia to pay compensation for the incident with the ship Arctic Sunrise, encourages illegal actions.

This was stated on Thursday by Deputy Director of the Department of information and press of the Russian foreign Ministry, Artem Kozhin.

“The Russian Federation did not participate in the present proceedings, since adhered and continues to adhere to the position about the lack of arbitration jurisdiction in the case,” he said.

According to the diplomat, said the decision “is not inclusive and ignores the extensive practice of States to counter the irresponsible actions at sea, including in regard to potentially dangerous complex technological objects”.

“Regret to say that their decisions arbitration in fact encourages purposeful illegal actions in the exclusive economic zones of States on their continental shelf, condone so-called “peaceful protest”, – said Kozhin.

Recall, the international court of arbitration in the Hague ordered the Russian Federation to pay the Netherlands € 5.4 million compensation for the detention of the vessel Arctic Sunrise activists Greenpeace in 2013. Noted that in addition to the said amount of compensation Russia must also pay the interest.

As reported, the ship, environmentalists and the ship’s crew was detained on 19 September 2013, after attempting to hold a rally against the oil drilling platform in the Pechora sea. They were charged with piracy, later business retrained on hooliganism and the defendants freed on bail.

The ship Arctic Sunrise of the international ecological organization Greenpeace left the port of Murmansk after nearly a year of detention in Russia.
