The restoration of St. Andrew’s Church in Kiev: what has time to do

On updating the interior of the Church employs about 30 restorers.

In St. Andrew’s Church in Kiev is in full swing ongoing restoration work. Last week the wizard started to replace internal communications and restoration of gilding. To get to all the elements in the interior of the Shrine, scaffolding installed beneath the dome of the temple.

More than two years, the restoration of St. Andrew’s Church masters have already restored the facade of the temple, replaced the external communication restored cast-iron staircase leading to a viewing platform. Now on updating the interior of the Church employs about 30 restorers.

“Master I have an old, Soviet engineering: electrical, fire alarm, carry out painting work, restore damaged and lost elements of stucco, and those in good condition, carefully removed, restaurerede and back. Started working on gold. Gilding is cleaned of dirt, soot and fixed with special solutions” — told us the Deputy Director of Nezapomente Sophia of Kyiv, Vadym Kyrylenko.

Hard at work and on the restoration of icons from the middle of the XVIII century from the iconostasis of St. Andrew’s Church — they want to bring back the original appearance. Recovery images are engaged in scientific restoration workshop Nezapomente “Sophia of Kyiv”. “Now the restoration is seven icons. Among them was “Cover”, “Annunciation”, “Transfiguration”, “the Prophet Zechariah” and “Sunday”. More than 200 years, the icon was restored several times and copied on top of the image. The last time they were restored in the 1950-ies, but did not have the modern materials and technologies,” explains restorer Anatoliy Ostapchuk.

After the restoration of the image will return to their former places. “We found that more than ten icons of the same size was messed up. This could happen before the war. For example, the icon “Baptism” should be on the right side of the iconostasis, not the left. Old pictures and descriptions of art the should be located the image of the Church,” says Ostapchuk.

In addition to the icons, and restore the iconostasis, which was smoky and is in poor condition. To complete all work in St. Andrew’s Church are planning by the end of 2019.
