Trudeau’s wife supported her husband at an important meeting with the Pope.
The Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau met with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
Media attention is caught, Sophie, who is considered to be an exemplary wife and style icon.
For a visit to the Vatican Sophie chose a black dress with three-quarter sleeves, a hat and stilettos. She smiled and, according to witnesses, supportive of her husband, who came to the Vatican in a bad enough mood as was going to speak with the Pope about the official Vatican apology to the indigenous people of Canada.
Recall that from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the XX century in Canada operated 132 schools run by Church organizations and funded by the government. In these schools has trained over 150 000 aboriginal children, isolated from their families and communities. This program later received the unofficial title of “killing the Indian in the child”.
And only in 1996 was closed last boarding school, White Calf Collegiate. In 1998 the government issued a Statement of reconciliation (Statement of Reconciliation), which included an apology to people who experienced abuse in residential schools, and the creation of a recovery Fund for indigenous peoples (Aboriginal Healing Foundation).
In 2009 the Vatican issued a formal statement about the role of the Church in canadian schools, the Pope expressed his regret about the suffering of indigenous peoples caused by certain members of the Church, and expressed sympathy and solidarity.
Now Justin Trudeau wants to make an official apology to the Vatican. Did he agree on this, not yet reported.
