Politicians do not want the appearance on the map of the new state.
The presidents of Iran Hassan Rouhani and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a meeting in Tehran said that their countries will do everything to ensure the immutability of state borders in the region after the referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan in Northern Iraq.
“We will not accept changes of borders in the region,” said Rouhani.
“Both Turkey and Iran, and Iraq have no other choice than to take serious and necessary steps to protect its strategic goals in the region,” he added.
Erdogan, for his part, called the referendum illegal and said it would lead to isolation of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
“From now on we will make more decisive moves. Both Iran and Turkey and Iraq’s Central government – all we need to do more heavy steps,” – said the Turkish leader.
