They are beautiful and graceful.
The leopard is the smallest representative of the genus Panther after tiger, lion and Jaguar, but perhaps the most beautiful. The modern look of this big cat had presumably evolved in Africa about 500 000-820 000 years ago.
Author: “the Leopard is my favorite African model, and for the sake of meeting with this cat I’m going back to Africa again and again!”
In early may I received information from my guide from Botswana that a female leopard was born 3 kitten.
I have long dreamed to film it the little leopards and I had the chance. I dropped everything and at the end of June flew to the Okavango Delta.
When I arrived in camp, Mombo, right from a small plane my guide brought me to the tree where they hung in the crowns of fresh prey leopard, antelope, Impala:
Usually when the female has kittens, she leaves them and goes on the hunt. If hunting is successful, then she brings the kittens to the production. This happens only during the day, when lions and hyenas are inactive.
To be honest, I didn’t expect to see a female with cubs in the first day, but that’s just luck. First we heard the cry of francolin (bird of the pheasant family), which were notified about the approaching predator, and then saw a female leopard with two kittens. There were three of them, but 2 weeks before my arrival, one kitten was killed by a hyena.
They didn’t pay attention to us, climbed the tree and began to eat. At this age they are starting to eat meat!
We have lost sight of these cats and found again. And then again lost. But during my Safari, we were able to track them down daily. I’ve seen a lot of interesting points, for example, the attack of the baboons and hyenas.
Kittens grow quickly and need to constantly feed. Once the female left them for 3 days and went hunting. And we were standing next to the kittens and watched.
Antelope Impala, the main prey of the leopard:
On the heels of the leopards followed by hyenas and it happens that they take prey of these big cats!
But when the female came back, we saw the jubilant happiness of the little kittens. These moments I will remain in the memory forever.
Being here I booked my next trip to this camp at the end of November and beginning of December. I wanted to take these kittens, but in eight months of age.
While I was going, I received a message that the female lost the two remaining kittens. Perhaps they were killed by hyenas or lions. But there was good news, the female again was due just before my arrival.
In the first month after birth, kittens are very little moving, and the female does not leave them for long, so the chance to meet the leopards are equal to zero.
By the way, the leopard survives a very small percentage of kittens. Watching one female from birth, I knew her story. She has 12 kittens survived by two daughters, rest of it is lost — killed or lions or hyenas. Her mother also gave birth to 14 kittens, but survived only one girl…
Experienced female constantly changing their hiding places, shifting her cubs from one den to another:
This is exactly it:
