They shocked society.
Even our enlightened age, does not detract from the hazards of the Mariner in the open ocean. People more versed in the Martian deserts than in the vast depths of the mysteries of our own planet — and constant shipwreck eloquent testimony. Here are a few mysterious disappearances of ships that baffled researchers.
Porpoise
Built in 1832, the ship earned the nickname “brig-chameleon”, as carried on each of the two masts of different sailing rig. In 1838, the ship went on a field expedition and even managed to get to Antarctica. Porpoise then moved to China where he disappeared without a trace, only two days from Hong Kong.
Wasp
British privateer Wasp participated in 13 operations, and by 1814 was a real bugbear for all enemies of the Crown. 22 Sep 1814 sloop boarded a merchant ship, although according to the issued orders were to sink all met the enemy ships. Just a day later “Wasp” mysteriously disappeared right in the middle of a well-known trade routes.
SS Baychimo
A huge cargo ship was used by the company to transport furs from Northern Canada. Winter 1931 started too early and unprepared ship stuck in the ice. Most of the crew were rescued, but the captain and twenty of the team members decided to stay on Board and try to ride it out. These people no one has ever seen, but the steamer more than once flashed a ghostly silhouette, frightening sailors into Arctic waters.
Varata
In 1909, the passenger steamer “VARTA” made a normal flight from Durban to Cape town. According to witnesses, (the parallel route was chosen by the military ship “Gestar”) night at the ship there was a strange flash of light, then the ship just disappeared. Throughout the century the search for “Vrata” resumed several times, the last futile attempt was made in 2004.
USS Cyclops
Steel giant “Cyclops” disappeared on the way to Baltimore from Brazil in March 1918. On Board ship carried a large supply of manganese, an important product for the production of ammunition. Interestingly, the Navy, the United States did not even bother to look for the missing ship with the necessary war for the load: one of the commanders later claimed that the rate went mysterious rumors about a “sacrifice”.
