The Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu opened a sculptural composition “They fought for the Motherland”

The Russian defense Minister, army General Sergei Shoigu, along with colleagues from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated in the opening ceremony of the sculptural composition on motives of a film of Sergey Bondarchuk “They battled for the Homeland”, released in 1975.

According to Sergei Shoigu, sculpture is the “monument to the people who immortalized the feat of our soldiers and our country in the movies.” He expressed the hope that such monuments to heroes of the great Patriotic war will appear throughout the former USSR.

The Russian defense Minister in his speech said, We continue our tradition in conservation and preservation of the memory of the heroes of our Fatherland, those who defended the country in the most difficult years in its history. We would like to see this tradition continued, that is why in the year of the movie, we open this monument. What we have here, my colleagues, the defence Ministers of the CIS countries, suggests that we have a common history that we should preserve, multiply and pass on to future generations.”

The sculpture, cast in bronze and representing five successive figures of the characters in the film, set in front of the building of the Russian Ministry of defense on Frunzenskaya embankment. The solemn ceremony was attended by veterans of the great Patriotic war, as well as relatives of the actors and the Director of the film “They fought for the Motherland”. Among the guests was also attended by Irina Konstantinovna Skobtseva, people’s artist of the RSFSR, the widow of film Director Sergei Bondarchuk, and mother of a novel. In the film “They fought for their Homeland” actress played the role of a medic; also known for roles Helen in Kuragino the movie “War and peace”, Desdemona in the Soviet adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello” and Vasilisa ilinichny in the television film “the Quiet don”.
