The statement of the Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan that is not a lawyer of his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad does not mean a shift in Moscow’s position on Damascus.
This was stated by the speaker of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov.
“The position of Russia and President Putin on Assad has not changed and she is well known. The phrase that Putin is not an advocate for Assad, also not new, and it was not first spoken in a telephone conversation with President Erdogan. Putin said that phrase earlier in some interview,” he said.
Peskov added that Putin “is an advocate of international law and advocate of international law.”
“He defends the position that does not permit making decisions about the future of any country any third parties or third countries. Putin believes that the future of Syria and the head of Syria cannot determine neither in Ankara nor Washington, nor Paris, nor in Berlin, nor in Moscow, the self-determination of Syria, only the Syrian people,” – said Putin’s press Secretary.
“Here the lawyer what the idea is, President Putin has been very consistent. Here no change in the approach of speech can not go,” – said the representative of the Kremlin.
