Iraqi forces and fighters of the police special forces repelled the terrorists from grouping “Islamic state” airport of the city of Mosul.
Currently, security forces continue the battle for the airport located near military base in al-Ghazlani.
The runway of the airport has long been destroyed by terrorists. However, it is considered a strategically important site in the Western part of Mosul.
Military operation to liberate Mosul began in October 2016. Air support to the Iraqi military having aviation countries in the U.S.-led coalition. By mid-January, Iraq announced the release of a significant part of Mosul. The army took control of the Eastern Bank of the Tigris river.
