Arbitration ordered Russia to pay over € 5 million as compensation for specified losses.
International arbitration in the Netherlands, in the Hague ruled that Russia should pay 5400000 Euro compensation for the seizure 2013 the 30 participants of the protest action environmental organization Greenpeace against oil production in the Arctic and their vessel. This arbitrage 2015 even acknowledged Russia guilty of violating the UN Convention on the law of the sea, but only now have determined the refund amount.

Russia refused to participate in the arbitration, claiming that it had exercised its sovereign right, when he seized the ship Arctic Sunrise under the flag of the Netherlands in international waters but within their exclusive economic zone. But the Tribunal stated that still has jurisdiction in this matter is the UN Convention on the law of the sea, which Russia has signed and thereby agreed to the decision of disputes on the application of the Convention.
Russia still has not officially commented on the decision. Russian state media “source” who claim that Moscow will study the decision and the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Russia continue to deny the jurisdiction of the arbitration.
We will remind, in 2013 the border guards of the Federal security service of Russia seized the ship Arctic sunrise on which activists of Greenpeace went out to protest against oil extraction in the Arctic and tried staged a protest at a Russian oil platform in the Barents sea.
