The reluctance of men to build a toilet recognized “cruelty”.
In India, 20-year-old girl made in a court permission to divorce her husband because during their family life, which lasted only five years old, he never finished to build her a toilet. All this time the victim had to work in the fields.
The fact that Indian law allows spouses to divorce only in rare cases such as domestic violence and abuse. Therefore, this case was unique for the country. The court in state of Rajasthan acknowledged that women are often forced to wait for darkness to use the fields instead of the toilet.
“We spend money on tobacco, alcohol and phones, but do not want to build latrines to protect the dignity of the family. In the villages women have to wait until sunset to go to the toilet. It is not only physical cruelty but an attack on their honor,” – said in the decree of the court.
