The inability to communicate as the cause of health problems

Scientists have found a link between inability to communicate with people and the development of serious diseases

The researcher found that people experiencing difficulties in communication, can be further exposed to serious health problems – both psychological and physiological.

In his opinion, the basis of this effect are loneliness and stress. However, many people who evaluate their communication skills as low, there is increased stress levels and feelings of loneliness.

Composing a questionnaire, Segrin identified four main components developed communication skills. Important factors he took openness, that is, the ability to share personal information with other people. He also highlighted the ability to provide emotional support to others.

Two other important skills became negative assertiveness (the ability to refuse unreasonable demands of others) and the skills to initiate relationships – the ability of the first to make contact, to get acquainted with many people.

For each factor Segrin amounted to eight statements, its agreement with which respondents evaluated on a scale. Also, the subjects answered a questionnaire which helped assess the level of stress, loneliness and diagnose psychological disorders.

Respondents who showed low level of development of social skills, on average, have noted a stronger feeling of loneliness and stress, as well as a greater number of diseases and disorders.

Segrin explains: if stress has long been considered an important risk factor for many diseases, loneliness is associated with them less. According to the psychologist, his work shows that the feeling of social exclusion is no less dangerous phenomenon than stress. However, many people who are potentially at risk, are not sufficiently aware of the dangers of loneliness.
