The IMF believes that Ukrainians should pay more.
The Deputy head of the International monetary Fund (IMF) David Lipton said the gas prices in Ukraine are very low compared to neighbouring countries.
He said this in an interview with EP.
“It is important that gas prices were determined by market shifts and the need to avoid conventional and hidden subsidies,” said Lipton.
He noted that poor households are protected from rising utility rates subsidies.
“For the rest of the citizens there was a significant increase in wages, which far exceeds the growth of prices for gas that provided by the normative legal acts. Gas prices in Ukraine is very low compared to neighbors. And finally, if Ukraine dreams about energy independence, it needs to invest in infrastructure, which is possible only under the condition that gas prices will reflect developments in the market”, – said the Deputy head of the IMF.
