In Moscow since 1997, the number of Muslims grew from 800 thousand to 3-4 million people, said Chairman of the Presidium of the Spiritual administration of Muslims of Russia, head of the Council of Muftis of Russia Ravil Gainutdin.
“In 1997, the Moscow mayor said that Moscow is home to 800 thousand Muslims. Today I hear from the leadership of the capital that 3-4 million residents — both permanent and temporary — are Muslims”, — he told in interview “news”.
According to Gainutdin, the regions, the number of Muslims is also increasing. For example, in St. Petersburg 10-15 years ago, Islam is professed by about 250-300 thousand people, and today — about 1 million “was Not a single community in the Kaliningrad region, Karelia, the Komi Republic and other areas. Today we are seeing the rapid development of the Muslim Ummah. There is a constant growth of the communities in the Primorsky, Khabarovsk, Altai Krai, Sakhalin”, — said the Gainutdin.
He added that in Russia remain children of former labour migrants, students from Arab countries, due to which there is the growth of the Muslim community.
According to him, in a country of just over 8 thousand newly built or returned to the mosques, they are not enough.
