The former President of Brazil received a prison sentence

Lula da Silva calls the case against him is politically motivated.

The court sentenced the former President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, to 9.5 years in prison, finding him guilty of corruption.

The former President and his wife were accused that they did not declare luxury penthouse in the resort town of Guaruja and illegally obtained 747,8 thousand dollars from a construction company OAS in exchange for assistance in obtaining contracts with the state company Petrobras.

The Da Silva’s lawyers intend to appeal the court’s decision. Prior to its consideration by the former President will be released.

He continues to insist on his innocence, denies any illegal actions and claims that criminal case against it fabricated by his political opponents.

“Operation Car Wash”
Lula da Silva was President of Brazil for two consecutive terms, from 2003 to 2010, and enjoyed the country very popular.

After his resignation the country was headed by the successor of the workers party Dilma Rousseff, soon, however, the address and the former and current leader, began to push corruption charges.

In 2014 prosecutors in Brazil started an investigation into the bribery scheme, organized by Petrobras, which has received in the press dubbed “Operation car Wash”.

The investigation was opened several criminal cases which have become defendants in dozens of major businessmen and functionaries of the Labour party – all of them were accused of involvement in a multibillion-dollar corruption schemes.

In March 2016 in this case Lula Da Silva was briefly arrested, but soon Dilma Rousseff appointed him as his chief of staff and ex-President, therefore, was granted immunity from prosecution.
But at the end of August last year, Rousseff was herself removed from office for violating budget legislation.

Brazil is experiencing the worst over the past decades economic crisis. After several years of promising growth, the country’s economy went into decline.

During the second term of the Rousseff government budget deficit, inflation and unemployment rose sharply, the country has lost with very hard-earned credit rating of investment level.
