The former head of the Pentagon shocked a statement about the duration of sanctions against Russia

Russia risks an eternity “to sit” under sanctions.

Passed by the U.S. Congress law on new sanctions against Russia deprives the White house of the chance to “bargain” with Moscow for the sake of solving the problem of de-occupation of Crimea. This opinion in an interview with “European truth” stated former U.S. defense Secretary Robert gates, who became the party held in Kyiv meeting of Yalta European strategy.

“The decision of the Congress stripped the President of the ability to bargain with the Russians, to convince them to change the policy in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. So I was not worried about the sanctions – I agree with them fully. But I believe that the President should be able to correct them,” said gates.

“The problem is that these sanctions – they are forever. Can you imagine that the U.S. Congress supported lifting sanctions against Russia until Crimea will remain occupied? I guarantee you: this will not happen. The chances are zero!” he added.

Adopted in the 1974 amendment of Jackson-Vanik, nakladyvaya economic sanctions on the Soviet Union, is still in effect, although the Soviet Union does not exist 26 years, said the former head of the Pentagon, illustrating how complicated the process of repeal of such laws.
“And imagine if the President decides to negotiate a partial lifting of the sanctions, their weakening, and the result will be the liberation of the Crimea? Now it is impossible, gates said. – I do not think that Congress did not leave the President any space for flexibility and neutralized the role of sanctions as a lever of pressure on Moscow.”
