Eight EU countries have urged Russia to stop preparing for the illegal elections in the Donbas.
Eight member countries of the European Union to the United Nations called on the authorities of the Russian Federation to stop the preparations for the illegal elections in the occupied part of Donbass. The corresponding statement before the meeting of the UN security Council was read by the British permanent representative to the UN Karen pierce at the briefing, which was broadcast on the Organization’s website.
This statement was joined by the UK, France, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Belgium and Germany. The British diplomat said that the statement demonstrates the consistency of the EU position regarding Ukraine. “We as member States of the European Union fully supported the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” – said in a statement.
“We condemn the illegal so-called “elections” planned for November 11 at outside the government’s control of the territories in the so-called “Luhansk people’s Republic” and “Donetsk people’s Republic”. If they succeed, these illegal elections would be inconsistent with the commitments made under the Minsk agreements and would violate the Ukrainian legislation,” – said in a statement.
It is noted that any of these illegal elections would be incompatible with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. “We urge the international community to join forces to oppose these illegal elections, which can only contribute to undermining efforts to achieve peace in the region. We urge the separatists to abandon plans for the elections and we call on Russia to use its considerable influence to stop the holding of these so-called elections,” – said the statement authors.
