The head of the EU delegation in Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli said that local elections in the Donbass possible in case of ensuring the free participation of the Ukrainian parties and the Ukrainian media.
“Local elections can take place when the necessary conditions for elections will meet the OSCE criteria. This means that Ukrainian political parties should have the opportunity to nominate candidates and participate in campaigns, and the Ukrainian media should have the opportunity to participate in the campaign,” said Mingarelli.
Also, the diplomat said that the negotiations on peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbass must achieve a political solution that will allow you to conduct these elections. “And then, on this basis, Ukraine needs to gradually regain control over these territories with the assistance of the international community”, — said Mingarelli.
As the diplomat said, the EU wants to take an active part in the recovery process of Donbass. “We would like to be in charge of restoring social and economic infrastructure in the Donbass immediately after a political solution is found,” said Mingarelli.
