The Emperor of Japan renounced the throne on 30 April 2019

The Emperor of Japan Akihito will officially abdicate on 30 April 2019.

The exact date became known after the meeting of the Commission on Affairs of the Imperial family, headed by the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.

The abdication in Japan will happen for the first time in 200 years. 83-year-old Akihito is the 125th Emperor of Japan, he on the throne since 1989. The throne is crown Prince Naruhito.

In public appearances, Akihito has expressed concern that the age and failing health might prevent him from acting. In 2012, he underwent heart surgery, in addition took place the course of treatment for prostate cancer.
