Archaeologists use drone discovered on the military training ground of the ancient temple
Archaeologists use drone has discovered a mysterious ancient building in the heart of the Israeli military ground.
The building, whose age is approximately 2200 years old, could be a temple or Palace of the ancient Edom of culture, it was excavated by the experts of the Israel antiquities authority and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The structure dates back to the Hellenistic period, when the region was strongly influenced by Greek culture.
Inside the building was found an altar, decorated with the image of a bull. Archaeologists believe that the building was built by the Edomites, a Semitic nation of South Jordan, which settled in the foothills of Judea. Scientists suggest that the altar may have been destroyed during the conquest of this area by the dynasty of the Hasmoneans in the second century BC. Describing the altar as a rare discovery, experts believe that the bull could be the image of the deity worshipped by the Edomites.
“If it was indeed Edom’s Palace or temple, this is a rare and exciting find – similar structures can be counted on the fingers of one hand”, — explained the leaders of the excavations, Dr. Oren, Gutfeld from the Hebrew University and Pablo Betzer from the Israeli antiquities authority. The ancient monument was discovered with the help of a drone.
“This technology helped us to define the place of work, and in fact, very quickly it became clear that here we waited a really unique discovery,” said archaeologists.
According to the Israel antiquities authority and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at the site were found ceramic vessels, painted bowls, pitchers and oil lamps. In addition, there was found an underground room that used to house the baths, presses for the production of oil and dovecotes. Were also found hidden tunnels the time of the Jewish revolt against the Romans, one of which was the kitchen boiler.
