Hypertension, or high blood pressure is one of the most common ailments today, causing various health problems, including strokes and heart attacks. Doctors call hypertension the “silent killer”, so as to detect its symptoms can be very difficult.
Hypertension affects not only adults, teenagers also may become victims of this condition, according to a new study by American scientists from the children’s hospital of Cincinnati in Ohio. Moreover, doctors warn that hypertension in young people can lead to damage to the heart and blood vessels if left unchecked the disease and not to control it.
It is important to note that damage to the heart and blood vessels in adolescents, occurs when the blood pressure level that is below clinical detection of hypertension in the age group, researchers say. High blood pressure in adolescents is based on percentiles rather than blood pressure levels as adults.

During the tests, the experts examined whether developing organ damage in adolescents with a pressure below the 95% percentile clinical definition of high blood pressure in young people. Measure blood pressure and assess organ damage from 180 adolescents aged 14 to 17 years, researchers discovered organ damage, even among adolescents whose blood pressure was classified as “normal” and was less than 80% percentiles.
