The court decided to start hearing Yanukovich in fact

If the President does not appear, it can be judged in absentia.

Obolonskiy district court of Kiev will begin the trial of former President Viktor Yanukovych in fact on June 26.

The decision was announced on Friday by the presiding judge Vladislav Devyatko.

“The court agreed with the prosecution that there are grounds for consideration of criminal proceedings in the Obolon district court according to the indictment, which was formed and sent to court. Yanukovych is accused that on March 1, 2014, staying on the territory of the Russian Federation, he committed treason by submitting a written statement to the President of the Russian Federation with a request to use Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine. The former President is accused of treason (part 1 of article 111 of the criminal code), aiding separatism (part 5, article 27, part 3 of article 110 of the criminal code) and aiding in waging aggressive war (part 5, article 27, part 2 of article 437 of the criminal code).

The prosecution will ask for life sentence for Yanukovych.
