The British Parliament approved the analogue of “Magnitsky act”

The new measure provides for the application of sanctions against human rights violators and their prosecution.

The house of Commons of the British Parliament passed a bill largely similar to the American “Magnitsky act”.

New British law will allow to confiscate the property and freeze the assets of foreign officials implicated in human rights violations.

The bill expands the definition of unlawful conduct that already exists in British law, and is used as the basis for the seizure of property from convicted of such behavior of people and seizure of their assets.

The authors of the bill suggested to refer to the illegal behavior of officials to their participation in torture and other human rights violations. The Deputy Minister of internal Affairs Ben Wallace at the debate noted that under the act will fall unscrupulous officials from around the world.

As a result, the bill received support from the opposition labour party, was adopted unanimously. Now it will send to the house of lords where it is expected to also easily pass the vote. After that, he will attain the status of law.

The founder of Hermitage Capital, William Browder, has long advocated the adoption of such a law, called the voting a real triumph. He believes that after the adoption of the law will instill fear into the hearts of the statesmen in Russia “and other autocratic countries.”

He also claims that in case of successful passage of the bill the UK will become the third after the U.S. and Estonia and the second country in Europe that has adopted a law allowing to prosecute people involved in the death of Sergei Magnitsky.

Magnitsky was a lawyer Fund Hermitage Capital. Browder claims that Magnitsky was able to identify fraudulent scheme, through which staff of the Russian interior Ministry abducted from the budget of the country for almost 5.5 billion rubles.

In the end, however, criminal proceedings were brought just Browder Magnitsky. Browder was sentenced in absentia by a Russian court to nine years in prison on charges of tax evasion and arrested in the same case, Magnitsky died in prison before the trial.

After the death of Magnitsky, which caused a wide international resonance, in the United States was initiated by the bill, allowing to freeze the assets of people involved in his death and other human rights abuses, and deny U.S. entry visas.
