Unusual geothermal pool in Iceland.
Blue Lagoon (blue Lagoon) is a unique geothermal source that is reckoned among themselves visited attractions in Iceland. Around the natural pools formed by the thermal complex, which is annually visited by about 300 thousand people. Is a natural Spa in the city of Grindavik (Grindavík) on the Reykjanes Peninsula (Reykjanes), South-West Iceland. Warm water, milk, baby blue and turquoise shades rich in minerals and have medicinal properties. The width of the Icelandic sights are 200 meters in length – about 2 kilometers, water depth ranges from 1 meter to 3 meters. The water temperature in a swimming pool averages +37-40°C, even in cold winter it does not fall below this limit.
The Reykjanes Peninsula, in the depths of which formed a hot spring, formed mainly of porous lava. Through her small slit seeping sea water, quickly heated by contact with igneous rocks and filling natural reservoirs deep underground. The temperature of this geothermal fluid can reach +240°C.
Blue lagoon – a man-made thermal pool, water which comes from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plants (Svartsengi) and is updated every two days. Before everyone bathed in the geothermal springs absolutely free of charge, however the increased incidence of burns was forced to fence the pool and adjust the water temperature.
The area, which has a world-famous landmark, belongs to the high temperature areas of Iceland with high geothermal activity because it lies at the junction of two tectonic plates: the American and the Eurasian. That is why to use natural resources for the benefit of residents of the nearby territories in 1976 was built a geothermal power plant. Energy company extracts the geothermal fluid from underground reservoirs by drilling wells up to 2000 meters. Hot water moves from the earth to the surface and then used to run turbines that generate electricity. Unique in its kind power station simultaneously performs two important functions – produces electricity and hot water for district heating of the city. After completing its mission, the water comes in the famous pools.
In 1981, when the alleged healing properties of the water in the thermal spring was widely publicized, people began to make it hot “bath”. In 1992, for the public was opened complex of geothermal Blue lagoon. On its territory for many years a centre of research and development focused on creating a Spa services and products that would help in the treatment of various skin diseases using mineral-rich water.
Blue lagoon on 2/3 consists of sea water, the remainder from freshwater. Cocktail of the thermal source comprises mineral salts, silica and blue-green algae, which are able to cure many skin diseases, particularly psoriasis. The local therapeutic mud deeply cleanses and revitalizes the skin, while the algae contribute to the mitigation of and nutrition.
When the water in the pool cools down to 37°C, the saturation of silicon in its composition is through the roof, which forms a white mass, familiar to visitors to the Spa. This paste fills in the cracks in the lava formations, the Blue lagoon gives the opportunity to expand. The same silicon plays a role in creating the special coloring of the water – its molecules refract the light rays, providing the bluish color of the water.
To survive in such a hostile environment can not be a single living organism that ensures the purity of water in terms of the availability of various harmful bacteria.
Around the Blue lagoon a few kilometers stretch of barren landscapes of the frozen lava flows of black color, which in combination with the blue waters of the geothermal pools create an enchanting picture.
Spa complex located on the territory of the Blue lagoon has a clinic, restaurants, shop, café and relaxation area and the hotel with 15 rooms.
