The banking crisis 2014-2017 cost Ukraine 40% of GDP, – USAID

Losses from the banking crisis 2014-2017 in Ukraine is estimated at 40% of gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

“Losses from the banking crisis 2014-2017 in Ukraine amounted to about 40% of GDP. The number of banks decreased by half,” the study says.

In addition, it is noted that even in those banks that are left to work in the market, the level of NPLs reaches more than half of the loan portfolio, and, for example, in PrivatBank it reaches 80%.

“Many of those banks that remained, have an extremely high level of non-performing loans (56% of total loans and more than 80% of PrivatBank),” according to the study authors.

The study “Leasing industry in Ukraine: trends and recommendations for growth” was conducted by experts of the USAID project “Transformation of the financial sector”. This is the first detailed analytical review of leasing services market in Ukraine.

At the presentation the authors of the study stressed that from the macroeconomic point of view, leasing can be the financial tool that would help Finance the renovation of outdated production capacity and upgrade infrastructure in Ukraine.

Ukraine forecast a rapid growth of demand for services of leasing companies in the next 3-5 years.
