In 1872, on the basis of the decision of President Ulysses S. Grant 898,3 thousand hectares of land in the North-Eastern edge of the plains of snake river, with numerous geysers, canyons, caves and the inhabitants were allocated to the world’s first national Park called Yellowstone.
From nature reserves national parks differ in that their territory allowed tourists and to a limited extent allowed economic activity.

3. Fiordland, New Zealand

The largest national Park of New Zealand occupies a large part of mountainous South-Western part of the South island. One of the most remote areas of New Zealand is incredible fjords, waterfalls and mountain ranges. The mountains of Fiordland are among the most humid regions on the planet. In areas of the Park inhabited by seals, thick-billed penguins, rare birds, and the world’s largest colony of black coral.
4. Banff, Canada
Area: 6641 km
The Park is located 110-180 km West of calgary in Alberta. Glaciers, ice fields and glacial lakes, dense coniferous forests and Alpine scenery annually attracts in the Park millions of tourists. The Park is home to 56 species of mammals, many of which can be seen through binoculars. In the center of the Park is the highest inhabited point of Canada, Banff is located at a height of 1463 m above sea level.
5. Grand Canyon, USA
Area: 4927 km
One of the oldest U.S. national Park located in Arizona. The main asset of the national Park is the gorge of the Colorado river. Its length is 350 km and its depth reaches 1900 meters. The canyon was formed approximately 10 million years: here are as many as 4 geological periods of the Earth. The canyon is filled with numerous rocks the most incredible shapes resembling towers and pyramids and temples.
6. Yosemite, USA
Area: 3081 km
The Park is situated on the Western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The hallmark of the Park are the giant sequoias, the rock El Capitan, dome-shaped fold Half dome and numerous waterfalls. Yosemite contains five major vegetation zones. The length of the tourist routes on the territory of the protected area is 1300 km.
7. Torres del Paine, Chile
Area: 2420 km
The Park is located 140 kilometers North of Puerto Natales, in southern Chile. The symbols of the Park are the numerous mountains, the height of which can reach 3000 meters, glaciers, fjords and lakes. The highest point of the Park is mount Paine Grande with a height of 3050 meters. Another hallmark of the Park is the large variety of fauna: it is home to 118 species of birds and 26 mammals, including the guanaco, Puma, Andean deer, South American Fox. In the Park you can find almost all landscapes of Patagonia.
8. Lake District, UK
Area: 2292 km

10. Swiss national Park, Switzerland
Size: 172,4 km
The only national Park in Switzerland is located in the heart of the Engadine valley. The Park includes the territory of the Alps at altitudes of between 1,400 and 3174 m above sea level. In the wild in the Park you can observe mountain goats, chamois, marmots, Northern hares, lizards and innumerable birds. In the Park dedicated 21 trail with a total length of 80 km.
11. Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Size: 6.81 km
Manuel Antonio is one of the smallest national parks. Despite the small territory, within the Park you can find tropical rainforests, and beaches, and rocky headlands. The Park is home to 184 species of birds and 109 species of mammals, including local symbols, sloth, iguana and a Howler monkey.
12. Guilin, China
There is a Park in southern China on the banks of the Lijiang river. In Chinese “Guilin” means “forest of Cassia trees”. The name was chosen because the pillars of local limestone in appearance resemble a stone forest. Mountains covered with dense vegetation, consisting of vines, trees and flowers.
