Now the legislation must be signed by the king.
The Association agreement of Ukraine with the European Union was approved by the Senate (the upper chamber of Parliament) of the Netherlands on 30 may 2017. This decision unblocked the way for ratification of the document.
The vote took place without discussion. On may 23, the Senate held a debate on this issue. As you know, the Association Agreement EU – Ukraine on 23 February accepted the lower house of the Dutch Parliament. The ratification of the Agreement was supported by 89 of the 150 deputies of the chamber. 55 voted against.
After the upper house of the Dutch Parliament approved the Agreement, it may ratify the Dutch government.
“This is very positive for the EU, for Ukraine and also for Russia, because it will help to stabilize the situation in the region”, – said earlier, Prime Minister of the Netherlands mark Rutte.
The Netherlands was the only EU member state that has not ratified the agreement on closer political, trade relations with Ukraine, as well as in the field of security. In a referendum in April 2016, the Dutch majority of the votes voted against the Association Agreement EU – Ukraine. The Netherlands called, in particular, the lack of guarantees of Ukraine’s membership in the EU or her right to apply for additional funds from Brussels. To eliminate disturbances of the Netherlands by Agreement of EU leaders on December 15 took the decision against Ukraine.
