While Elon Musk said that a full-fledged mass production of the car will begin no earlier than 2020, although previously it was assumed that the production should start one year earlier. It is assumed that at the moment, “Tesla” is simply nowhere to produce a compact crossover. All production facilities of the plant in Fremont occupied, including, in connection with great demand for Tesla Model 3.

Earlier, the management of the company Tesla Motors has an agreement with the Shanghai government about buying land for the construction of a new plant for the production of electric cars and batteries – Girafarig 3. In total, the project will invest about two billion dollars. It is not excluded that the Tesla Model Y will be produced in China.

As for the crossover, it will borrow the existing chassis from the Tesla Model 3. However, some technical and stylistic solutions to be borrowed from the older model X. For example, the compact crossover will get the original back door, which the company calls “Falcon wings”. According to preliminary data, the Tesla Model Y will be equipped with two motors (one on the front and rear axle), and will offer sets of batteries of different capacities.
