Next year Sweden will be called up for military service, four thousand people in connection with a shortage of volunteers in the military service and the growing foreign policy challenges.
“We had the problem of manning of military units on a voluntary basis and this needs to be addressed one way or another”, – quotes Reuters the words of the Minister of defence of Sweden Peter Holquist.
Military conscription in Sweden was repealed in 2010, but the Russian military activity, in particular the annexation of Crimea in 2014, encouraged the Swedish authorities to return the call, the Agency reports.
According to the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, a return call was supported by all factions of the Riksdag, and after the adoption of the bill parliamentarians exclaimed, “Finally!”.
In the fall of 2016, it became known that in connection with the deterioration of the geopolitical situation in Sweden decided to put 150 infantry on the island of Gotland in the Baltic sea.
