One of the strangest museums in the world.
In rare cases, at a flea market you can find interesting art, but it is unlikely in this place you can meet the Director of the Museum of the Louvre, or the Prado gallery. But Michael Frank — head of the Museum of a very different kind. He visits the pawn shops every time want to enrich collection of the Museum of Bad Art. It is the only Museum in the world dedicated to the worst art. It is composed of three galleries in Brooklyn, Somerville and South Weymouth, where approximately 600 choicest exhibits.
The Museum of Bad Art or MOBA was founded twenty years ago in 1994 when antique dealer Scott Wilson on the advice of friends began to gather a collection of bad art. Wilson acquired some really bad paintings and began showing them to his friend’s house. During the year, these exhibitions became popular, prompting him to move the collection in the basement of the old community theater in Dedham, Massachusetts. When the building was sold, the Museum found a permanent home in Somerville cinema, is conveniently located near the men’s restroom. The constant sound of flushing the toilet water and corresponding odor helped to create a suitable atmosphere for the Museum to preserve the best of the worst. Later opened two additional galleries in Boston.
The Museum acquires its collection from stores second hand goods, flea markets, garage sales and even garbage dumps. Often the artists themselves make donations. The collection of the Museum goes through a rigorous evaluation process. There are no children’s drawings or deliberately distorted paintings. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most unusual museums in the world.
“We are looking for works that appeared in an attempt to make a breakthrough in art — but something went wrong,” says Michael Frank. Nine out of ten of the paintings are selected by the Museum because they are not bad enough, since the Museum of Bad Art are really very strict standards.
