Last month the developers Valve announced the beginning of testing technology Motion Smoothing, which allows to synthesize new frames to ensure the full frame rate on slow machines. Recently it became known that the beta phase is completed and new technology has become available to a wide range of users.
SteamVR Motion Smoothing works as follows: at the time when the app starts to skip frames enabled smooth movements. Based on the last two frames are made calculations of the motion and animations, and then extrapolated a new frame.
Thanks to the synthesis of new frames, the user still sees the full frame rate (e.g. 90 Hz for HTC Vive and Vive Pro), but the application needs to handle only one of the two frames, which significantly reduces the requirements for hardware performance gaming PC. Moreover, with a further drop in performance, the technology will be able to synthesize two or even three frames for each submission.

The technology works automatically and is only activated at the right time. By the way, the function of motion blur is disabled when using helmets Oculus Rift or Windows Mixed Reality with SteamVR because their own display drivers use a different mechanism for skipping frames applications. In addition, SteamVR Motion Smoothing at the moment works only on computers running Windows 10 with Nvidia graphics.
