The Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy has refused to admit that on Sunday, Catalonia held a referendum on independence for the region.
“I can tell you what everyone already knows: in Catalonia, there was no referendum on self-determination, and the power of our (Spanish edition) of the law remained the same,” said Rajoy, speaking in a statement after the close of polling in Catalonia.
According to him, most of the inhabitants of Catalonia behaved like law-abiding people and refused to participate in the vote.
“We did what we had to do. We are a government of Spain, and I, the head of the government, has claimed responsibility. We have fulfilled our duty to protect the rule of law. We acted within the law and only the law”, – he stressed
The Spanish Prime Minister thanked the security forces, who “did their duty”, dispersing protesters in Catalonia, as well as other leaders that have condemned the referendum. Rajoy said that the government is still open to dialogue.
“I’m not going to close any doors. I have always offered a dialogue, but within the law and with respect for democracy. Let’s hope that they (the government of Catalonia. — ed.)… will no longer make mistakes. Let’s hope that they can get away with trail that leads to nowhere,” he added.
