The crystal ball in the hands of Christ on the painting “the Saviour of the world” does not distort space.
Writer Walter Isaacson in a new biography of Leonardo da Vinci revealed the unusual properties of crystal ball that holds Jesus Christ in the portrait “the Savior of the world”.
Isaacson noticed that the crystal ball in the hands of Christ does not distort the space behind, which is odd, because during the writing of da Vinci’s paintings have explored optical illusions and refraction of light, which is confirmed by numerous records and charts in the diary of the artist.

“Leonardo decided to portray the crystal ball realistic because thought it was a distraction. Or he tried therefore to convey the miracle-working quality of Christ and his balloon,” explained Isaacson.
