One of the most elusive of the whale species in the world – Remezov TRU – hit the camera lens in the region of the Azores.
Rare whale species was discovered more than a hundred years ago, but until now people did not have records of this animal in the wild.
“Imagine: these animals the size of elephants, which we just couldn’t find. When I saw the video, I just couldn’t believe it,” says marine biologist Natacha Aguilar de Soto.
In addition to video, the researchers received a detailed underwater photographs of live females and males. According to scientists, a group of whales in the video demonstrated coordinated behavior that is typical of other types of Ramazanov.
Remezov TRU — species of toothed whales widespread in temperate waters of the Northern and southern parts of the Atlantic ocean and the southern Indian ocean. They feed on shellfish and rarely come to the shores, preferring the open ocean. They were discovered in 1913 by the American zoologist Frederick TRU. Over the past years, scientists and sailors saw the whales only a few dozen times, and never been caught. The corpse of the whale was found for the first time only in November 2012.
