The question of disposal of plastic remains unresolved
Since 1950, the world produced approximately 9.1 billion tons of plastic, two thirds of which is garbage.
This is evidenced by the results of a study published in the journal Science Advances.
The study’s lead author Roland Geyer notes that every year the growth of production of plastic is increased. Forecasts relating to the reduction of no production, he says.
“We are on the road to planetary disaster,” said Geyer.
It is reported that for 65 years plastics production has increased 200 times. If in 1950 the volume of production was 2 million tons, by 2015, this figure has reached 400 million tons.
With such a rapid growth of plastic production, the issue of disposal remains unresolved, which negatively affects the environment.
“Only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, 12% was destroyed, and the remaining 79% is accumulated in landfills or in the environment”, – noted in the study.
Leader in the manufacturing of plastic products is China, followed by Europe and North America. About 35% of plastic and designed for production of containers.
We will remind, annually in Ukraine is about 12-15 million tons of municipal solid waste, 40% of which is packaging.
