Scientists have proven that the opinion that monkeys love bananas, in fact, is a myth.
According to the researchers, the monkeys can eat per day 45 to 50 different types of fruits.
A team of scientists from the University of East Anglia found a close correlation between the size of monkeys in South and Central America and their diet. During 42 years of observations of primates it was established that monkeys of medium size, such as Saki, eat in a day from 45 to 50 kinds of different fruits for five meals. According to the researchers, usually associated monkeys with bananas, but in fact the primates of South and Central America give preference to a little-known fruit trees sapota and brosimum.
Larger counterparts of Saki, such as Howler monkeys and woolly spider monkeys, are mainly used as food the foliage. Meanwhile, the diet of the youngest members of the species consists almost entirely of protein foods: due to high metabolic rate they eat more insects, which are rich in nutrients.
