Scientists accidentally figured out a way to prevent mutations of human DNA.
Joint research activities of scientists from the U.S. and Canada helped to identify a way to prevent changes of human DNA. The discovery came during experiments with viral DNA.
During the experiments, we used the genomic editor CRISPR/Cas9. It consists of samples of deoxyribonucleic acid viruses, and artificially created enzyme Cas9 is able to find duplicate sequences in DNA and remove them.
But what was the surprise of the biologists who discovered the fact that the virus was able to eliminate the malicious from their point of view the enzyme and thus to fully defend their genomic sequence from unwanted overwriting.
Thanks to this accidental discovery, microbiologists were able to study in more detail the virus find genomic areas responsible for the preservation of DNA in the experimental test and build them into human DNA. This allowed us to demonstrate a reliable way to prevent overwriting human DNA.
