Experts analyzed electronic medical records of 46 of the thousands of Britons who died at the age of 60 years and older. This sample included both healthy people and those who suffer cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
A relatively sharp drop in blood pressure on average 14 years before death was observed in patients with dementia, heart failure, initially high blood pressure and weight loss. However, relatively healthy people at the end of life pressure is also gradually decreased. This refutes the hypothesis that lowering blood pressure may be associated with the treatment of hypertension.
Scientists plan to continue research to determine the cause of senile hypotension. This will help to develop recommendations for the elderly to lower the risk of death.
