American scientists found an effective way to retard aging. A study published in the journal Nature Communications, reports the University of California, Los Angeles (USA).

Experts drew attention to how, over time, change the size and shape of mitochondria in fruit flies. In mid-life (one month after birth) these organelles in fruit flies, are large and elongated, which prevents them to perform their functions and, consequently, contributes to aging.

Experts have found a way to increase the lifespan of male fruit flies by 12 per cent and 20 per cent females. The biologists helped protein Drp1, the contents of which, as noted by the authors, with time reduced in flies.

The increase in the level of Drp1 led to the fact that the number of large mitochondria was reduced, and the number of physiologically normal to grow. The level of Drp1 was increased in the week when the fruit flies age of 30 days.

The scientists also showed that the activation of the Atg1 gene leads to the destruction of damaged mitochondria.

“It is as if we took a muscular tissue of the middle-aged and rejuvenated her, said co-author David Walker. We actually delayed age-related deterioration of health, and seven days of intervention was sufficient to extend the life and improve the health of the flies”.

The results of the experiments, the authors believe, fair to nematodes, mice and primates. In the future, the authors plan to develop drugs that would reproduce the effect of the increase in the level of Drp1 in the body.
