American scientists are studying the remains of ancient organisms. Presumably, they lived 100 million years ago, before the Cambrian explosion.
Scientists from the University of California (USA) during the study stumbled on the oldest traces of life of animals.
Their research uses the latest and unusual technique during use which was not looking for fossils, and molecular evidence for the existence of life on our planet. This method involves the use of biomarkers.
It is reported that the samples of the studied rocks were collected in India, Syria and Oman. The results of their analyses indicated the presence of steroid compounds, which are a waste product of sponges – the earliest forms of life on Earth. Body sponges themselves over the past millions of years was destroyed without a trace. However, the scientists were able to prove – in the study period on the planet there were complex organisms, replacing an ancient single-celled.
It is reported that as a result of research in the sediments were found steroid compounds that can be created and modern sponges. It is assumed that their distant ancestors inhabited the sea over 600 million years ago.
