Kind of tiny parrot saves energy, leaping from branch to branch during the production of food is a skill that may have helped the ancestors of birds for the first time to get off the ground.
These little birds jump between branches up to 30 times per minute, receiving a push from your feet and adding a few strokes of the wings to extend its range.
A new study shows that they do so in ways that minimize energy requirements, and suggests that dinosaurs, like birds, could benefit from this technique. The model shows that the ancestors of the birds could get great support for your body weight with every flap of the wings, as they became smaller over time – the pattern observed in the evolution of modern birds.
The findings in the study can also be useful in robotics, for which the adoption of various modes of transportation is becoming an increasingly important goal.
