The study is published in Astronomical Journal.
Scientists from Kiel University explored the planet GJ 1132b, which is 1.4 times bigger than Earth and is 39 light years from our planet. According to their observations, “super-Earths” is shrouded in a thick layer of gas — or methane, or water, or both.
The identification of an atmosphere on a planet similar to the Earth and understand its characteristics is an important step in the search for extraterrestrial life. But it is very unlikely that on this planet it can exist: the surface temperature of 370 degrees Celsius.
“As far as I know, the hottest temperature in which life can exist on Earth is 120 degrees Celsius, and it is much colder than this planet,” said Dr. John Southworth, who directs the study.
