Scientists do not know the nature of an unusual signal

An international team of astrophysicists has discovered a mysterious x-ray flash in a small galaxy located at a distance of 10.7 billion light years from Earth.

A study accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

In October 2014, the space telescope Chandra registered in the area of the celestial sphere, called the CDF-S (Chandra Deep Field-South), flash: the intensity of x-ray radiation from this source increased dramatically for a few hours.

A few minutes into the surrounding space were released more energy than all the stars in the galaxy, which is the source. After about a day the signal disappeared. Before the Chandra Observatory did not register such events. The observations of space telescopes Hubble and Spitzer allowed us to determine the distance to the source.

Scientists do not know the nature of an unusual signal, however, put forward several hypotheses of its origin: the collapse of massive stars, the merging of two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole, as well as the destruction of a white dwarf a black hole.

Each of them fully describes the event from CDF-S. Scientists do not exclude that we are dealing with a new astronomical phenomenon.
