According to experts, 85% of the water contained in the top ten largest lakes in the world
Canadian scientists from McGill University in Montreal for the first time measured the length of shoreline of all lakes in the world and determined the volume of water in them.
In this researchers helped satellite maps and remote sensing data of the Earth collected over the years. Just was studied 1.4 million lakes on Earth.
It was found that these waters contained a total of 180 thousand cubic kilometers of water. Such a volume would be enough to cover all the continents with a layer of water thickness of 1.3 meters. If you connect the shoreline of the lakes together, its length is about 7 million kilometers, which is 5 times greater than the diameter of the Sun and is approximately equal to its circumference around the equator.
According to experts, 85% of the water contained in the top ten largest lakes in the world, and only 15% comes from all other reservoirs.
As it turned out, “the main land of lakes” can be considered not Finland, as we used to think, and Canada – there are almost 900 thousand small and large lakes. As the researchers explain, in the distant past 15-20 thousand years ago, the territory of the state was covered by glaciers and their retreat has formed the basin for nearly a million small and large bodies of water.
