Scientists figured out how to reduce the cost of solar panels

Ученые придумали, как удешевить солнечные панелиA new method of production will help to improve the price indicators panels.

Scientists have significantly improved the operational stability of perovskite solar cells. During the test, accelerated aging, during which they were exposed to sunlight at 60 °C more than 1000 hours in a row, they lost only 5% performance.

Researchers from the Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne in Switzerland has significantly improved the stability of perovskite solar panels by adding thiocyanate copper, protected with a thin layer of the recovered graphene oxide. Perovskite solar cells can provide high conversion efficiency of light to electricity, but to be competitive, film perovskite must be durable.

Among the substances used in the creation of perovskite cells, copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) is the most stable, effective and cheap connection. It costs just $0.5 per gram, whereas currently used spiro-OMeTAD is approximately $500 per gram. Previous attempts to use copper thiocyanate was suspended due to problems related to the deposition of high quality layers of compound on the film of the perovskite, as well as its chemical instability.

Conventional silicon panels have reached the limit of efficiency by only 25% of sunlight can be converted into electricity. At the same time, a relatively new technology based on perovskite solar cells has reached over 22% efficiency. Given the huge flexibility in the use of chemicals when creating perovskite materials and low cost processing, these panels may soon become the new standard of solar cells.
