Scientists close to unlocking the secrets of the Aurora on Jupiter

Researchers have obtained data from the probe Juno, which explain the nature of the polar auroras of Jupiter.

Apparently, auroras at the poles of Jupiter to create an accelerating electrons, both on the Ground and another type of interaction of charged particles.

The span of Juno over the polar region showed that electrons in Jupiter’s atmosphere are accelerated toward Jupiter at energies up to 400,000 electron volts – which is 30 times higher than the largest of the Aurora observed on the Ground.

“Jupiter has the brightest auroras caused by some turbulent process of particle acceleration, which we do not yet fully understand,” explains lead researcher Barry Mouk from Johns Hopkins University.

When the electrons have reached the poles of Jupiter, they dissipated the clouds of plasma that exist in the upper atmosphere of the planet, and gave rise to flashes of light and ultraviolet radiation. Due to turbulence the electrons are accelerated so much that in large quantities to create in the sky a blinding flash. A similar process occurs with the appearance of some very weak polar auroras on Earth.
