Scientists boasted an unusual invention

The concept of flexible robotics allows machines to mimic the behavior of living objects, such as people. But before the addition of flexibility means a loss of power and strength. Scientists from MIT and Harvard say they have developed a soft artificial muscles that will allow robots to lift objects many times superior to their weight.

Muscle mass of 2.6 grams is able to lift a weight of 3 pounds, according to Engadget. It consists of an inner plastic liner, which if necessary can be replaced by metal or any other. This plastic skeleton is surrounded by liquid or air that is sealed inside a special bag, which plays the role of “skin”. Of muscle movement and behavior are controlled by the skeleton. Design so that it is compressed and relaxed in a certain way. After controlling the pressure inside the bag, it is possible to simulate the contraction of the muscles, which leads to their movement.

In their experiments, scientists were able to create samples that lifted flowers from the floor, folded into a tube and was reduced to 10% of the initial size. There was also a copy of these muscles of the water-soluble polymer, and therefore the technology can be used in vivo with minimal impact on the environment. Scientists say that among the possible applications of deep sea research, surgery with minimal invasiveness or shape-shifting architecture. It is seen that the variation between the applications are huge — this is the potential development.

The system collected through these muscles easily scalable: during the experiments, the scientists collected samples from a few millimeters to meters. The technology is cheap and requires little effort. One muscle can be made in 10 minutes, it will take 1 dollar. Scientists admit that they did not expect such power from their new developed mechanisms. They hoped that the muscle can withstand a ten-fold excess of its own weight, but able to withstand the weight of a thousand times its very own, surprise.

Many scientists are working to create artificial muscles. This development can open the way to real humanoid robots, to machines that move more gracefully and is able to perform a variety of precision work. The researchers had previously achieved success in this area. Similar results, but using different technology, has received a team of scientists from Columbia engineering University. Their muscle is also able to withstand a weight of up to 1000 times its own.

Prior to this, scientists from MIT found a way to make cheap muscle nylon. But scientists from the University of Texas at Dallas has developed a unique method of “knitting” artificial muscles.
