Saakashvili declared a hunger strike

Saakashvili declared a hunger strike and will counter attempts of force-feeding.

The arrested ex-the Chairman of Odessa regional state administration, Mikheil Saakashvili announced the beginning of the hunger strike. This was reported by his lawyer Ruslan Chernolutsky after the completion of the investigation.

“Saakashvili declares the beginning of an indefinite hunger strike. He also will resist any attempts of force-feeding,” – said the lawyer. Chernolutsky also added that in case of acceptance by court of the decision on election of a preventive measure in the form of arrest for 60 days, Saakashvili “even more hard-going to continue the hunger strike”. As UNIAN reported earlier, on Friday evening, December 8, security forces detained the ex-President of Georgia and former head of the Odessa regional state administration of Mikheil Saakashvili. He was taken to the detention facility of the SBU.

Soon there appeared his supporters, as well as a significant number of security forces. After completion of the investigation, which lasted several hours in the night of 9 December, the press Secretary of the Prosecutor General Larisa Sargan reported that the prosecution will ask the court to elect Saakashvili measure in the form of house arrest, wearing a bracelet. However, she stressed that all actions against the former head of the Odessa regional state administration was carried out in accordance with the procedural legislation. 6 December it became known that the Prosecutor General’s office of Ukraine announced Saakashvili wanted by three articles of the Criminal code. In particular, he is charged with attempt to commit a crime (part 1 article 15), the crime is considered committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons, if jointly committed by several persons (two or more) (part 2 of article 28), assisting members of the criminal organizations and concealment of their criminal activity (part 2, article 256).

Conducting a search is entrusted to the operational units of the National police and the security Service of Ukraine. On the morning of 5 December in the house on the street kostelní in the apartment, where Saakashvili, the security forces raided. Later, they arrested Saakashvili and put him in the car, but activists blocked the passage of the car. Between police and activists clashed. After a while, after opposition activists smashed the Windows, broke the door to the van and freed Saakashvili. Law enforcement officers used tear gas. The politician and his supporters came to the Verkhovna Rada.

Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko declared that Saakashvili organized protests to seize the state power in Ukraine and assistance to members of criminal group of the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, and businessman Serhiy Kurchenko in the termination of their criminal prosecution. In turn, Saakashvili rejected charges of the public Prosecutor in the assistance of members of the criminal organizations.
