Moscow would like to continue working in the Assembly.
The speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said that Russia is seriously considering leaving the Council of Europe.
She stated this at a meeting with President of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Liliane Maury Pasquier in Moscow.
“We ripen the inner decision to withdraw from the Council of Europe. I say it to you sincerely,” said she, turning to the head Assembly.
The reason for such a statement, according to Matvienko became the ongoing crisis in the Council of Europe. As is known, Russia in 2015 is not participating in the PACE, and in the summer of 2017 has ceased to pay contributions to the budget of the Council of Europe.
The Federation Council speaker stressed that Moscow would like to continue working in the Assembly, and is interested that the Council of Europe was “a universal pan-European organization” and ensuring “the unity of humanitarian law from space of the Antarctic to the Pacific ocean.” “At the same time we assess the situation in the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as critical,” – said Matvienko.
It is noteworthy that the statement made by the representative of the Russian political elite at odds with the positions of the foreign Ministry. A week ago, the Ambassador in Strasbourg said that Russia will not withdraw from the Council of Europe.
